I enjoyed reading Andy’s lo-down on the Sacha Baron Movie BORAT, as I was meant to see it with some friends but then we chickened out and saw something a little more safe!
In the spirit of passing a Christmas movie lo-down, last night I (not by choice really!) went to see Eragon with the youth group from Church last night.
Eragon effetively the Star Wars Story (scarily close parallels according to Star Wars Fans), set in a Lord of the Rings settings. Heres the Plot outlline from IMDB
"In his homeland of Alagaesia, a farm boy happens upon a dragon’s egg — a discovery that leads him on a predestined journey where he realized he’s the one person who can defend his home against an evil king"
Plenty of money has been thrown at this, but not entirely mindlessly, there are some nice visual effects and the CGI for the dragon is pretty good, which steers the movie clear of being a poorly animated unrealistic farce. If you’re a Lord of the Rings fan then this film probably has enough of the adventure/fantsy combo to leave you entertained and feeling like you’ve seen the sub standard poorly scripted LoTR4!
The Film is rated: Rated PG for fantasy violence, intense battle sequences and some frightening images. Other than that it was a good enjoyable movie, though with the current movie choices in the cinema right now, not a not to be missed…if that makes sense. Even though the film was a fairly mild PG (due I guess to some Orkish and demonic creature things) the Ads before the film were pretty crazy for a PG, not to sound like an aging "wouldnt have happened in my day" kind of person, but the ads were pretty risque. I had to look away from the screen at least twice during the Ads, and thats not really a sign of a PG to me.
If I could go to the movies again, Id like to see any of the following which are out right now:
- UPDATE: Night at the Museum – SEEN THIS, CLICK HERE FOR MY REVIEW This seems like a pretty fun kids film with one of my favourite duos, Ben Stiller/Owen Wilson and also Ricky Gervais, that combo means Im will HAVE to see this at some point
- Apocalypto – I always enjoy a bit of history fiction, and Mel Gibson is as good behind the screen as in front of it (see We Were Soldiers)
- Casino Royale – I was all ready to see this film then I got pretty badly ill, everybody loved it so I really want to see it now.
- The Nativity Story – There has been plenty of talk about this around the Blogosphere, and media attention drawn by the fact the girl who plays Mary ended up Pregnant at 16! It was made by the director of thriller Thirteen. I also thought it ould give a deeper understanding of the reality of the Christmas story as it is acclaimed as beeing historically accurate.
- Deja Vu – This is my top pick, I REALLY want to see this Denzil Washington "minority Reportesque" film
Also just because I have to plug this Movie, as it pretty much encapsulates all I love in a movie is Chrildren of Men, it is pretty gritty but definately worth a watch, its the best movie I have seen this year!
