This is a Profound Mystery 1.1

Scot McKnight features an interesting article on house church from the Daily Herald.

The article cites Barna as saying:

A cultural shift is taking place, Barna argues. Some of the characteristics that made the megachurch attractive to baby boomers, such as elaborate worship performances in a concert-like venue, are what is driving away the next generation of Christians.

In the UK at least "the next generation" seem to be still attracted by large gatherings, and though demonised for their lack of intimacy, I think they have their value in relation to how Churches operate missionally. Also looking into elaborate worship performances, the youth age at the church I attend love new worship music which is much more complex (see Hillsong United) than your 80’s Praise and Worship numbers with 3 chords.

Even as the author of a book about generational disillusionment, I am much less cynical toward mega-church than one might expect. As followers of Jesus, our aim is to make a lifestyle of Christ’s ideals–individually and collectively. The real issue is not whether you arrive at that lifestyle via mega, mini, or micro church. The real issue is whether change/transformation is taking place. Is fruit being produced?

Loving the Church is about wanting the best outcome for the Kingdom of God and a good part of that is the fruit of the Christian that attends. Sometimes I think we can let our past hurts and scars from the past harden us into writing off any form of worship that isnt what we have decided is best.

Loving the Church like Christ does involves holding our methodology (way of doing) humbly as our own expression of historical, biblical Christianity.
