Shawn Blanc is one of those guys who writes those excellent professional looking blog series type things, and he does them very well. If you havent yet discovered his blog its right here check it out.
Not being one of those very professional looking blogs, I can only link to what is turning out to be a very good and practical guide to fasting and try and offer my two pence (or cents depending on which side of the Atlantic your on).
Shawns first three posts are here (1), here (2) and here (3). After fasting for the first time in a while last week (its been too long) I felt like I almost rediscovered it as a spiritual discipline for myself and wanted to share to some old tips and some new ones too.
1) Fasting is not about being religious about things, its about a step towards God, about making yourself feel empty to focus on him, to break the rythm of life a little bit.
2) You can fast anything, or everything, but essentially if you are wanting fast food I use the following helpful points. a) I drink water, and plenty of fluids. b) If you become so hungry that you absolutely cant manage talking to God and it becomes all your energy just to fight what feels like the agonising pain of starvation do one of the following, brush your teeth, drink diluting juice, chew some gum. At some point I’ve used all of those to get me through tough parts of fasting. Also dont be too super spiritual about it, if you break it, just get back on the horse, if you’ve commited to fast dont just break and think "Oh well its done now!".
Those are my short tips about fasting anyway, for more in depth discussion check out Shawns blog, and feel free to add your own practical and spiritual tips in the comments.
