Top Tips for Mobile Phone Contracts Part Five

  • Cash Back or Credit

    - Alot of the contract deals are via cashback, although technically they make the deal how it is advertised, they are often false saving in that they work in a way which requires you to send off forms and get cheques after 6 month periods, it basically means you’ll be paying the full price every month, spend ages sorting out forms, cashing cheques and if your like most people will spend the lump sum on something instead of keeping in your bank account paying for your phone bill every month.

The best deals have the discount direct on the account in two (or both) ways

    1) Say you have half price line rental it is processed by the network and is reflected directly on how much your account is debited by, eg. this should look like this on your statement: "Talk and Text 600 @ 50% - £15" Alternatively they will credit your account, and that wil work just like any other credit where your bill will come in and be charged on the credit of the account, for example there is £30 credit on the account and your first bill is £15 so you dont have to pay the bill it simply comes off the credit, and this goes on for the months after until the credit is finished. The only benefit of credit over the direct line rental discount is that if your phone charges are more than simply your line rental the credit is used to pay for those as well.

This draws to a close this seemingly boring post series, but hopefully it will help somebody get a cheaper deal and not be hypnotised with sales techniques.

    Remember:

Choose the contract not the phone, the lower the Contract Length the better, Get on with the salesperson, Be empowered by your consumer power and shop around, Theres alway a little more sweetener to the deal, and steer clear of cash back deal which are essentially false savings.
