List of 100 – Divine Wisdom?

November 14th, 2007 · 2 Comments

In the church tradition that I have been involved in throughout most of my life there has been a largely unmentioned but prevalent way to get vision, direction, or a plan, and that is the "idea from above!"

Now I certainly dont want to seem to cynical about all of this, and before I get a furor of emails protesting that we can hear from God, I agree. But the normal cycle of things takes this pattern often: I need to know what to do, I think, I pray, the same things keeps coming up, there are a few seemingly coincidental confirmations during my day now = I feel like God is saying this.

as I said, this is perfectly fine way to discern to discover what you think Gods intention in a certain situation is, but if we believe that God is the creator of everything, and we are made in the image of God, then our creativity is an image of the creators creativity, which if it doesnt complicate things too much to say, is the very definition of creativity…..aaaand your back in the room. Not only do you have Gods creativity inside you, you as a Christian also have Christ himself inside you (Col 1:27, Rom 8:10, Eph 3:16) and that can bring some pretty good discernment!

All that is to say, if your stuck for an idea, a way forward a plan, how about trying something like this, a list of 100,

One hundred entries? Isn’t that way too many?” Bear with me: it’s exactly this exaggeration that makes the technique powerful. When starting your list you may believe that there’s no way to get it done. But then, at some point during the exercise, you will naturally have your subconscious mind naturally engaged in the process. That’s when you will uncover many new and surprising answers, and ideas will start flowing again. Making a List of 100 is a beautifully articulated cooperation between the conscious and subconscious minds tackling one single problem.

If you need some convincing through a little religious language that this is permissable then try praying before you begin and asking God to fill you with creativity to have ideas and to bring you attention to the way forward in the situation.

Liam, thanks for the post. I’m always interested in ideas on brainstorming like this one and the other links it leads to.

    Peace,
