We arrived last night after not too much bother apart from having to change our airport transfer tickets and using up some of our GBP on over priced mini cans of coke on the easyjet flight.
Once we collected our baggage and got the car rental place, who it seemed weren’t having a great night of it,with there computer crashing all the time meaning we were stuck waiting for about an hour. Once we finally started to sort out our reservation we found some BIG problems, though the booking had just requested a Visa card the company decided they had to have a credit card! Although the staff were apologetic and understanding, their boss on the other side of the phone was not so! Essentially we convinced them to accept rachels parent’s card for which we are VERY grateful.
We found the car and its a brand new VW Polo with only 183km on the clock, its basically the new version of my car with some great extras! After sitting in the car in the car park and recovering from our ordeal at the car rental shop we prayed for my driving as getting into the wrong side of the car and having the gear stick in the other hand whilst trying to drive on the wrong side of the road in the snow was a bit scary!
Needless to say we were glad of my GPS, so we headed down the road and found a brilliant little restaraunt where we got an AMAZING meal, we didn’t even know what type of meat it was, but it was covered in the most amazing tasting gravy and mustard seeds,in fact i reminded me of the type of sauce Inga Malmqvist would make.
After a relaxing meal we set off once again and tried to get to grips with the right hand side of the road, and then the autobahn. Seeing a sign for 130 was quite liberating…just kidding but after a while it was fine. We tried to follow the GPS to the point we thought it was right and then the directions of our hostel owner from the phone in Kranj…..we ended up at the austrian border! So we turned not sure if we were going in quite the right direction at 1145pm. A few more windy snow covered alpine roads and we came upon a police checkpoint and of course got pulled over. When the realised we were british they wanted to see my passport and drivers license. In all the panic of the car rental shop I hadn’t put them back in my coat pocket where they had been. For what felt like an hour but was probably more like aminuite we both frantically looked for them. No luck, finally the policemen got bored and just gave me a breathiliser test (for which I was glad I didnt have any of Rachels wine) which I passed clear and they sent us on our way.
About 20minuites more drive we came upon the beautiful village of podkoren where we are now staying for the week and were greeted by a small friendly party of Slovenians who we played UNO with, drank some honey schnapps and slovenian beer before retiring for some well earned rest.
Just before I finish some cool things here are: a)the price of eating out b)the mattresses are full of horse hair! c) The water is the freshest most amazing tap water you will ever drink.
Even If I dont keep up the blogging like this all week I will probably try and keep up with uploading our daily photos to my Flickr photo page so we have back ups so If you want you can keep checking them daily here (click on the small photos to see them bigger!)
