Today was our first day of snowboarding, first we headedinto Kranjska Gora to buy a new hat for rachel. Then we went back to the hostel is meet our snowboard tutor "dario" who drives a clapped out old vauxhall vectra with drum and bass blasting out but is a nice guy all the same! After getting our snowboards we headed in to pick up rachels boots as they didnt have any in her size and we didnt have a working conversion between europeans sizes and UK sizes, made me think why doesn’t the world just work with the same shoe sizes, it cant be that difficult.
Anyway we finally got onto the slopes after a little eastern european price negotiation with our tutor. Once we got on the slopes we had two pretty gruelling hours of tutoring where I realised I am certainly not fit enough, but we managed to learn how to stop (a very important skill) and also got someway into mastering the whole turning thing. Needless to say though snowboarding at this stage of the game is not as easy as it looks!
Last night once we had got back to the hostel to be greeted with a slovenian board game equivalent of age of empires, and some nice red wine but we were told that we had been given a pretty duff recommendation that day from someone in a coffee shop who told us to go to "Papa Joes" as the best pizza in Slovenia. Not only was the pizza not great but due to our poor slovenian interpretation of the menu, I ended up with octopus tentacle pizza…not joking. Anyway our friendly hosts gaves us a couple of good suggestions and today we tried one out and it was delicious, we both had traditional slovenian dishes and didnt feel like eating for the rest of the week nevermind go backon the slopes for the afternoon, we also were given a shot of complimentary honey schnapps which seems to be the standard festive drink here, its delicious. Anyway after buying some cheap gloves we went back on the slopes.
Realising our bodies, fustration and fitness wouldn’t last much longer we headed back to the car and went to the local mercator hipermarket and revelled at the crazy amount of smoked sausage one supermarket can stock. We also invested in a bumper pack of tissues as we seem to be having either a reaction to the horse hair mattreses or a very quick onset of the cold, our noses are running marathons!
We picked up a little taglatelli to cook back at the hostel as neither of us are very hungry but need some carbs for tomorrows attempt at snowboarding. We also picked up Jenga as a gift for our hosts who are are board game crazy! More blogging tomorrow maybe, now I have to get a shower.
