Thinking Clearly about Barth’s Soteriology

March 21st, 2008 · 6 Comments

Blogging this week has been a little slow, Ive had plenty at work to keep busy with and am revving up to start my very final piece of work for my Theology Degree on Barth for the course with John Webster at Aberdeen, which is why there has been a sudden splurge of Barth related links in my delicious bookmarks.

Im thinking about writing about Barths Soteriology in relation to the common critque that he promoted Universalism, the belief that when all is said and done, everyone is saved. Which incidently, my suspicion is that Barth wasn’t advocating the belief directly, if at all.

During my search for Barth resources/blogs online I cam across the following which might be of interest or use to you:

If anyone has read within this sphere I would be welcome to some reading suggestions.

I am a Catholic (interested in theology) and unfortunately know little about K. Barth. Could you refer me to a good primary source to read. I am particularly interested in soteriology.

    Hi there,

See also Engaging with Barth – reviewed here:

    Edward,
I would recommend starting with the book “Karl Barth” by Eberhard Busch. Its a collection of autobiographical texts collated by Busch who was his last assistant. After that you might enjoy the gottingen dogmatics which were his first attempt at systematic publication.

I forgot to mention that traditionally Barth main area of soteriological work is done within the Church Dogmatics II/2. Hope that helps.

Thanks for commenting Guy, I hve enjoyed your blog for a couple of weeks now. I havent been able to get a copy of Engaging with Barth but I understand my proffessor here at Aberdeen (John Webster) has an endorsement on the cover, so I will probably try and check it out.

    Thanks again,
    Liam
