iCall on the iPod Touch

June 6th, 2008 · 3 Comments

I noticed this app for iPhone today which enables you to make Voip calls in wifi areas and switch between voip and GSM to save minutes..pretty nifty.

I was wondering, surely VOIP software would work on an iPod Touch? It has wifi, and if it was jailbroken then you could install voip apps? Has anyone tried this?

If would certainly be a cheap way of having an iPhone if, like me, you are almost always within some kind of wifi network, it could act as a second phone, or even better as an internationally roaming iPhone, without the contract and ridiculous roaming rates I discussed before.

Engadget has the low down on the iCall software which looks pretty cool. One point though, do you think they could have come up with a name that is slightly more distinct from Apple’s calendar app iCal?

"Said application is currently in beta form, though a release isn’t quite ready for the public at large. Put simply, it enables iPhones to switch from GSM to WiFi (when WiFi is nearby, of course) on-the-fly in order to save cell minutes and bypass the hassle of manually changing over. Interested?"  - Engadget

    Hey Liam,
VOIP is working on the iPod Touch. The only problem is that the device has no microphone. However, there are some microphones on the market like this one: http://imods.wordpress.com/2008/01/27/touchmods-release-all-new-mic/
    See you,

Hi Virgil, I think that iCall is a 3rd party app for jailbroken phones, but when the app store comes out it may include the software.
