I was reading today and this verse in Deuteronomy 10 really stood out:
"At that time the LORD set apart the tribe of Levi to carry the ark of the covenant of the LORD to stand before the LORD to minister to him and to bless in his name, to this day. Therefore Levi has no portion or inheritance with his brothers. The LORD is his inheritance, as the LORD your God said to him"
Although there are obviously some serious OT contexts here, I thought about how as a result ofthe resurrection we have the Holy Spirit residing in us, our bodies are now the temples (1 Cor 6:19), our decision of faith is not only an acceptance of the election offered to us in Christ, but an acceptance of our emptyness, our lack, the fact that we are little and Christ is much. The Burden of the Lord’s prescence reminds us that we live with an altogether different economy from the other ‘tribes’, the Lord is our Inheritance, and what an inheritance!
But as those set apart we can often feel the self pity that comes with being a minority, ‘How can that person live to earn money as his main goal whilst I have to trust in the Lord and serve him without any sense of real repayment?’ but Deuteronomy reminds us that we are set apart, and we have an inheritance in the Lord. Yesteday I was praying with a friend who found out a good friend of his had a very serious illness, whilst we all have very good answers that satisfy the logic of our minds in times like that, our hearts can sometimes wonder where the justice is in it all. The answer is maybe that the Lord is our inheritance, not because the Lord can’t or won’t heal this guys friend, but that the truest of healings is the restoration of our relationship with our creator, into sonship not just slavery.
