Frustration with Browsers

April 14th, 2009 · 7 Comments

I’ll be blogging a bit more about this in the near future, but Ive been working on a couple of different web projects recently, and I just wanted to share a little frustration with you. The frustration can be summed up in two words, Internet Explorer.

I’ve been playing around with the simple design orientated blogging platform tumblr, you may have noticed I included it as a miniblog on the left sidebar of this page under asides. Whilst trying to work on this I’ve also been learning little bits of CSS which, as far as I understand it, is the code that influences how web pages are laid out.

The only other variable for web design is the browser, below is an example of my work with tumblr through chrome, and the next is through Internet Explorer 6. (click on the images for full size)

I am new at this CSS game and have no idea how to fix this, apart from to say, PLEASE don’t use IE6.

Chrome

Internet Explorer

I agree. I’m not just into Microsoft bashing for the sake of it, but I would have to say that IE always gave me the most grief when I was testing my sites with different browsers!

I use Firefox, but I’ve been debating switching to Chrome browser, as I continually hear great things about it! :)

Donovan, I agree, mindless bashing just gets annoying, and there are definately different opinions amongst those you make websites who say we should still try and panda the web development process to IE users as much as to firefox or chrome, or any other more ‘understanding’ browsers, I just unfortunately dont have the know-how to make sure my site looks the same in all browsers, so I guess I have little choice but to say ‘Please, Please dont use IE!’.

Bors, Ive been using chrome quite a bit recently and appreciate its cut down appearance, and because I use a pretty old mac (which requires me to throw coal in the back of it every few minutes) I wanted something which was more efficient on the systems resources. Had that not been such a consideration I may have stayed with firefox as it has a bunch of great add-on scripts etc.

Thanks Liam, Just one question… What about Privacy concerns with Chrome? I heard that Chrome since it is made by Google, they log your usage of its browser, and it sends its data back to Google. Is this true?

Boris, Firstly its important to say, Im not too hot on privacy issues on the web, but secondly, the browser usage logging you are talking about can be opted out of during installation (or later in the settings) and if you opt in, it is supposed to be comepletely anonymous. I figure If I trust google with my email (gmail) then I might as well trust them when they collate statistics using my data anonymously. Id be interested to hear your thougths though.

Thanks Liam, I like your analogy between the email vs browser usage.

I read somewhere, where it says “provide Google with a wealth of new data measuring not only what users are looking for online, but the specific sites they are seeking outside of Google”

So I guess as far as user tracking… it’s probably for Google to learn even more about it’s users. And probably a way for them to get better advertisements directed to the people using the browser and or Google.

At least thats my take on it…
